Created by E. D. Hirsch, Core Knowledge outlines a specific core of shared knowledge that results in cultural literacy. The spiral design of the Core Knowledge Sequence exposes students to increasingly complex content and depth as they move from kindergarten through eighth grade. Cultural literacy, or schooling based on common knowledge, ideas, and references, establishes a strong foundation for future learning while opening doors to effective communication – doors that provide meaningful participation in the wider society. This in turn promotes educational excellence and equity as all students become grounded in common knowledge, which leads to increased reading comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills.
